Five of the tour events will be held in various golf courses all over the Iberian country, and these events are: • Open de Andalusia, March 26 to 29 • Open de España, April 30 to May 3 • Volvo World Match Play Championships, September 24 to 27 • Madrid Masters, October 8 to 11 • Castello Masters Costa Azahar, October 22 to 25 Open de Andalusia First of these PGA European Tour events is the Open de Andalusia, which will be held at the Real club de Golf de Sevilla in Seville, Spain from March 26 to 29. The Open de Andalusia was first held in 2007, and its current champion is the Frenchman Thomas Levet. Open de España Following the Open de Andalusia is the prestigious Open de España, the national open golf championship of Spain. Established in 1912, it became part of the PGA European Tour in 1972. The Open de España will be held at the PGA Golf de Catalunya in Girona, Spain from April 30 to May 3. The current champion is Peter Lawrie. Volvo World Match Play Championships The Volvo World Match Play Championships will be held from September 24 to 27. The chosen venue this year is the Finca Cortesin Golf Club in Malaga, Spain. Established in 1964, the Volvo World Match Play Championships has showcased the talent of many golf masters throughout the seasons. The defending champion is Ernie Els. Madrid Masters The Madrid Masters, scheduled from October 8 to 11, is one of the newest events in the PGA European Tour. It was created as a substitute for the Open de Madrid, which the PGA European Tour has decided to hold as an alternate event to the HSBC World Match Play Championships. The Madrid Masters will be held at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, with Charles Schwartzel as the defending champion. Castello Masters Costa Azahar The last PGA European Tour event that will be held on Spanish soil is the Castello Masters Costa Azahar. Tournament dates are from October 22 to 25. The Castello Masters was inaugurated in 2008, with Sergio Garcia as its first champion. The tournament will be held at the Club de Campo del Mediterraneo in Castellon. Golfing in Spain Spain is one of the leading destinations for golf in Europe, with dozens of golf courses strewn across the country. The country first gained its widespread fame as a golfing destination when it hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup, which was held in Valderrama. Currently, Spain is the site of more courses of the highest quality than any other European country combined. Many of the golf courses in Spain are clustered at the Costa del Sol along Spain’s southwestern coast. The climate and the varying landscapes of Spain are the two qualities that make the country an ideal destination for golf tourism. The country experiences a Mediterranean climate that makes the weather warm and mild throughout the year. Golfers in Spain can also enjoy different kinds of landscapes depending on where they play in Spain. Golf courses near metropolitan areas offer an urban landscape while those in the country offer a tranquil rural scene.
